Self-Reflection: Pleasure and Happiness

Reflection Questions

We will use a different format for this Reflection. You can simply think about your answers or write them down for a later rereading. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions. They are simply an invitation to consider where your moments of pleasure and your deeper sense of happiness come from.

My Pleasures

Think about the past month.

  • What experiences brought you immediate pleasure?
  • Which pleasures do you experience most often?
  • Which pleasures do you intentionally make time for?
  • Which pleasures seem to happen almost automatically?

My Happiness

Now think more broadly.

  • When do you feel genuinely content with your life?
  • What accomplishments make you quietly proud?
  • Which relationships contribute most to your happiness?
  • When have you felt a strong sense of purpose?

Looking Beneath the Surface

Consider the pleasures you pursue.

  • Which leave you feeling refreshed afterward?
  • Which leave you wanting even more?
  • Have any pleasures ever become habits you later regretted?
  • Are there pleasures you've intentionally limited because they carried unwanted costs?

The Balance

Reflect on the relationship between pleasure and happiness.

  • Do your daily pleasures generally support your long-term happiness?
  • Are there times when you've sacrificed future happiness for immediate gratification?
  • Are there times when you've postponed pleasure so long that life became less enjoyable?
  • How well balanced do these two aspects of your life feel today?

The Sources of Lasting Happiness

Looking back over your life:

  • What has brought you the deepest happiness?
  • How important have relationships been?
  • How important has meaningful work or contribution been?
  • Have your sources of happiness changed as you've grown older?

Looking Forward

If nothing changed over the next five years, would you be satisfied with the balance between pleasure and happiness in your life?

If not,

  • What small change would move you toward a richer, more satisfying life?
  • What pleasure would you like to enjoy more intentionally?
  • What source of happiness deserves more of your time and energy?
  • (For all the above sections) What important question do you wish had been included?

Reflection Notes (Optional)

Use this space to capture any thoughts, insights, questions, surprises, or intentions that came to mind while completing this reflection.

Final Reflection

If someone observed how you actually spend your discretionary time—not how you wish you spent it—what would they conclude brings you the most pleasure? Would that same observer conclude you are building a happy life?
