Reflection Questions

Before reviewing your score, consider these questions:

  • In what situations are you most likely to become defensive?
  • Which is harder for you—setting a boundary or accepting criticism?
  • Is there a relationship in which clearer boundaries would improve both your well-being and the relationship itself?
  • When was the last time you defended yourself in a way you later felt proud of?
  • When was the last time defensiveness prevented you from hearing something important?
  • How do fear, guilt, or the desire for approval affect your ability to stand up for yourself?
  • What would it mean to remain both kind and firm during your next difficult conversation?
  • What important question do you wish had been included?

Sometimes these questions are more revealing than any score.

A Note About This Reflection

This reflection is not intended to measure your assertiveness or determine whether you are "strong enough." Instead, it explores how well you preserve your agency when facing criticism, conflict, or unreasonable demands. Healthy self-defense is neither aggression nor submission. It is the ability to remain calm, set appropriate boundaries, listen openly, and act in accordance with your values. Rather than focusing solely on your total score, notice the individual statements where you rated yourself highest. They may point to situations where greater self-awareness and emotional steadiness could help you remain both compassionate and self-respecting.
